Utah Cultural Site Stewardship

The Utah Cultural Site Stewardship program was (at the time) a part of the Utah Division of State History and they needed a logo as well as several other materials to get the public involved with their amazing work.

In their words, "All of us, whether we’re hikers, OHVers, archaeologists, climbers, or campers, have a responsibility to take care of not only the natural environment, but the cultural environment as well.  Becoming a Site Stewardship is a great opportunity to help protect public lands and cultural resources by monitoring archaeological sites for damage."

I wanted the logo to have connections to the outdoors and historical/pre-historical elements without appropriating any imagery from indigenous people so I went with a footprint because it leads the viewer to be conscious of their impact on the land and the stories that are there. I also wanted it to look natural and rough like Utah's amazing landscape.

After the logo was decided upon we moved forward to stickers, posters, rack cards and their manual. I worked with the program's director to decide on a look that was reminiscent of vintage national park posters and that look carried over from the posters to the stickers and on to the manual. This was an amazing project to work on and I can't wait to continue working them and seeing the program grow.
